Trouble report 513

Automatic detection of focal length sometimes produces strange results

Versions affected

4.0

Description

This problem occurs sometimes when you select Automatically detect focal length with fully automatic stitching.  The stitched images are severely warped.  Examining the focal length with the Camera properties dialog box or by rerunning the Wizard shows a very small value for focal length (for example, 1mm, 5mm, etc.).

This problem apparently occurs because the focal length detection is affected by the results of prior Wizard stitches.

Workaround

If you encounter this error, you may be able to work around it by following this procedure.

  1. If you have exited the Wizard, use the Restart the Wizard command to restart the Wizard on the bad panorama at the Describe your camera Wizard step.  If you are still in the Wizard, use the Back button to return to the Describe your camera Wizard step
  2. Remove the checkmark from the Automatically detect focal length checkbox.
  3. Enter 999 for the focal length.
  4. Select the Automatically detect focal length checkbox.
  5. Advance through the Wizard to restitch your panorama.

Status

Corrected in V4.1.  Automatic focal length detection is no longer affected by the results of prior Wizard stitches.
