I have a problem. I'm creating a pano with PF and as a final result with PTViewer. The size of the viewer is set to 800x600 and the height of the pano picture is also 600. That's why when I zoom in the pictured is getting blured, it's normal. I want to solve that problem using a very large picture file with a height of 2048 but I don't know how to force PTViewer to load the image as a default with a height of 600 (about 30% of the original size, so as default it would be like zoomed out to 30% of the original file size) so then while zooming in the picture will be sharp and I will reach 100% of the picture size. Can somebody help me with it?

Using the "View Size" in the QTVR option will allow you to accomplish this. See the notes here: http://www.panoramafactory.com/help/help.html?p=hidd_qtvr_settings.html

One note to John though. I have been meaning to mention that starting with 5.0 this does not seem to make a difference. Has something changed here? My recent images are all full screen.

The ability to zoom in and keep the quality depends more on the jpg settings than anything. PF will re-size to the output size specified and then zooming will quickly cause pixelation. I have taken the images and set the QTVR image quality to 100 and I have great ability to zoom in.

I would only recommend this if you are viewing locally though. Some of the ones I made were 10-15Mb in size and when I loaded them to a server it took a significant amount of time to download even running on high speed broadband. Test a few to see what your results are.

Personally, I have made my settings very low for PF, but then use some html code to make the images full screen, which make a very pleasing result. Take a look here for some examples:

David -- I'm not sure why your images are now full screen. I beliver that the viewer size parameter applies only when you display the image inside a web page written by PF. I don't think it applies if you use QuickTime viewer program from Apple.

Mateusz -- There are two parameters that control the size of VR images, but they have different effects.

The values you set on Wizard Step Create your panorama control the size and resolution of the image data.

The values you set on the PTViewer Settings dialog box (from the button on the Save Image dialog box) control the size of the viewer in your web page.

So if you want the viewer to be 800x600, set these values on the PTViewer Settings dialog box. And if you want the image data to be high resolution, set the height on Wizard Step Create your panorama to 2048. Or leave it set at Maximum size for maximum image resolution.

This combination should create an image that starts at lower resolution and can be zoomed to higher resolution. Of course, once you reach to resolution of the original image data, it will become pixilated. Even The Panorama Factory can't create image data that was not there originally!

The default viewpoint and zoom of the viewer can be set using a hotspot. Create a rectangle hotspot that surrounds what you want to see as the initial view and mark it as This hotspot is the default view.

NOTE: If you choose Set tilt angle to zero (the default), the zoom setting will be reduced so that the entire rectangle is visible with a tilt of zero. I recommend you experiment with different settings for this option and decide what works best for you.

The message "Loading picture ... x% complete" is displayed by PTViewer as it loads the picture into RAM. When the picture is very large, PTViewer may show the "100% complete" status for a long time before displaying the panorama.

When the "100% complete" message remains displayed forever, this indicates that the image is too large for PTViewer.

It is unfortunate that PTViewer doesn't report a more specific error message when the image is too large. It seems that the only way we have to know that this has happened is to wait a long time to see whether the image appears.

I don't know what is the maximum size image that can be displayed by PTViewer. The limit may depend upon what browser you are using and perhaps also upon what operating system your comuter has (version of Windows or Mac OS X). For example, the last time I tested this on Windows XP (with Internet Explorer 6) I was able to display an image with about 10 million pixels (about 10,000 by 1000), but I was unable to display an image with about 20 million pixels (about 14,400 by 1400).

When you encounter this problem, you need to reduce the size of your image (in pixels). Please note that it is the number of pixels, NOT the size of the JPG file in megabytes that limits the ability of PTViewer to display the image. This is because PTViewer must decompress the image in order to display it.

Unfortunately, reducing the image size means that the resolution of the image is reduced also. So you have to find a compromise that permits PTViewer to work properly, but also displays with sufficient resolution / image quality.

This is a classic tradeoff in the imaging business -- space versus image quality. In general, you cannot increase the image quality very much without also increasing the size of the image data.

I wish I had a better answer for you. Maybe you could experiment with the QuickTime viewer. It may permit you to display larger, higher-resoution images.

Thanks for answer, I will try with different file resolutions. I've also tried the QTVR, but when I move the pano it freezes and then there is a windows error (I have the newest QT). That's why I'm now working with PTViewer.

You are probably right with the size of the image, I've tried an image with a little bit less then 10mln pixels and it worked fine but when I exceeded 10mln PTViewer did not show the pano.

Hi Mateuesz,

I am interested in knowing more about the QTVR problem you described:
"when I move the pano it freezes and then there is a windows error"
Would you be willing to send a bad QTVR to support @ panoramafactory.com so that I can look at it?
